If water is dripping from your indoor mini split head, you are not alone. It is the most common service call for ductless systems in Central Texas. The good news is the cause is usually simple and fixable without replacing the unit.

Clogged condensate drain or dirty air filter
The most common indoor leak is a blocked condensate drain or a dirty air filter. The mini split pulls moisture from the air. That water collects on the evaporator coil and drains through a small hose to the outside. If the drain line gets clogged with algae, dust, or a spider nest, water backs up and overflows the drain pan. A dirty air filter restricts airflow. That causes the coil to get too cold and freeze. When it thaws, the excess water overwhelms the drain pan. Cleaning or replacing the filter every month during heavy use and flushing the drain line with a vinegar solution twice a year usually prevents this.
Improper installation or low refrigerant
If the unit was not installed level, the condensate water cannot flow downhill. Even a slight tilt in the wrong direction traps water. Also, if the line set was poorly insulated or the refrigerant charge is low, the copper lines can sweat. That condensation drips down the wall and looks like a leak from the unit. Low refrigerant is usually caused by a factory defect or a bad install. Most local HVAC contractors charge $3,000 to $6,000 per zone on a custom quote. When to call a pro and what you can expect
If you have cleaned the filter and the drain line and the unit still leaks, call a professional. For units installed by us, we will diagnose and fix the leak at no charge if it is a workmanship issue. For units installed by others, we charge our standard service fee. We do not add trip fees or surprise charges. Honest exceptions to our flat install rate are a very long line set, a panel upgrade the house already needed, or unusually difficult mounting.
