Mini Split Maintenance: Filters and Coils

Updated September 2026

Mini splits are heat pumps that cool through brutal Central Texas summers and handle mild winters without a furnace. Like any HVAC system, they need regular attention to keep running efficiently. The two most important components to maintain are the air filters and the indoor and outdoor coils. Dirty filters restrict airflow, causing the system to work harder and raising your electric bill. Dirty coils reduce heat transfer, which can lead to frozen indoor coils in summer or reduced heating performance in winter.

Mini Split Reef installs ductless systems at a flat rate of $2,000 per mini split, however many units. That includes equipment, labor, line set, standard electrical, refrigerant, testing, cleanup, and even a Home Depot run for touch up paint. There are no trip fees or surprise add ons. Property managers, landlords and multi unit owners get a volume discount off that per unit rate. Our service area covers Austin and the I 35 corridor north to Waco and Killeen and south to San Antonio, all at the same flat rate.

How Often to Clean Mini Split Filters

Filters should be cleaned every 2 to 4 weeks during heavy use in Central Texas. In summer when the system runs daily, monthly cleaning prevents dust and pollen buildup. In winter if you use the heat pump only occasionally, every 6 to 8 weeks is fine. Cleaning is simple: turn off the unit, open the front panel, slide out the filter, rinse with lukewarm water, let it dry completely, and reinstall. Never operate the system without a filter. Dirty filters restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and can cause the indoor coil to freeze. If you notice reduced cooling, ice on the indoor unit, or a musty smell, check the filter first.

Coil Cleaning and Professional Maintenance

Coils need less frequent but more thorough cleaning. The indoor evaporator coil should be inspected every 6 to 12 months. Dust and mold can accumulate, especially in humid Austin summers. Use a soft brush and a no rinse coil cleaner designed for mini splits. The outdoor condenser coil should be cleaned every spring before heavy cooling season. Hose it off gently with low pressure water, being careful not to bend the fins. Do not use a pressure washer. If you notice the outdoor fan running louder than usual or the unit struggling to cool, the outdoor coil may be clogged. Mini Split Reef installs all units with proper clearance for coil access, and we test each system before leaving. We recommend a professional inspection every 2 years, but cleaning your filters regularly will greatly extend the intervals needed for deep coil cleaning.
