Why Your Mini Split Is Not Cooling and What to Check First

Updated September 2026

Mini splits are heat pumps. They cool through brutal Central Texas summers and handle mild winters without a furnace. When your unit stops cooling, it can be frustrating, especially in the middle of a heat wave. Many causes are simple to fix yourself, saving time and money. Others require a professional. This guide walks you through the most common issues, step by step.

Mini Split Reef installs ductless systems at a flat rate of $2,000 per unit anywhere in our service area (Austin, I-35 corridor from Waco to San Antonio). We include equipment, labor, line set, standard electrical, refrigerant, testing, cleanup, and even a Home Depot run for touch up paint. No trip fees or surprise add ons. If you need a repair or replacement after troubleshooting, we can help with an honest assessment.

Check the Air Filter and Indoor Unit

A dirty air filter is the most common reason a mini split loses cooling capacity. When the filter is clogged, airflow drops, the coil can freeze, and the unit struggles to cool. Turn off the system, open the front panel, and remove the filter. Wash it with warm water and mild soap, let it dry completely, and reinstall. Do this every month during heavy use. Also check that the indoor unit's fan spins freely and that no furniture or curtains block the return air or supply vents.

Check the Thermostat and Settings

Make sure the system is set to cool mode, not heat, fan only, or dry. Set the target temperature at least five degrees below the current room temperature. If the remote shows an error code, consult the manual. Some mini splits have a timer or sleep mode that can override your settings. Also check that the outdoor unit has power and is not tripped by a breaker. If the outdoor unit is silent while the indoor fan runs, the compressor may not be engaging due to a setting or electrical issue.

Check for Refrigerant Leaks or Blockages

If the indoor unit blows air that is only slightly cool or warm, and the filter and settings are correct, the refrigerant charge is likely low. This can happen from a leak or an improper installation. Refrigerant issues require a licensed technician with proper tools. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself. If your mini split was recently installed by Mini Split Reef, we pressure test and charge every system to manufacturer specs. For older units, a leak may need repair. If you are a property manager with multiple units, our volume discount applies to replacements as well as new installs.

Questions

Straight answers

What should I do if my mini split is blowing warm air?

First check the filter and clean it if dirty. Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and the temperature is lower than the room. If those are fine, the system may have a refrigerant leak or a compressor issue. Call a professional. If the unit was installed by Mini Split Reef, contact us for warranty service.

Can I fix a refrigerant leak myself?

No. Refrigerant work requires EPA certification, specialized tools, and knowledge of pressures and safety. Attempting it can damage the system or cause injury. Always hire a licensed technician.

Does Mini Split Reef service existing units they did not install?

We focus on installation, not repair. However, if you have an existing mini split that needs replacement or a new system, we can install a new unit at our flat rate. For repairs, we recommend contacting a qualified HVAC service company.

How much does a typical mini split installation cost in Austin?

Most quote based contractors charge between $3,000 and $6,000 per zone. Mini Split Reef charges a flat $2,000 per unit, including all standard components and labor. Property managers and multi unit owners receive a volume discount off that rate.
